Dry Needling is a form of myofascial trigger point release using small needles, similar to acupuncture needles. However, it is based on a different approach to acupuncture. Dry needling is based on the principles of trigger point release and neuromuscular release, which comes from an evidence-based Western medicine approach. This differs from the Chinese method of acupuncture. Traditionally they use a system of needle placement into various parts of the body to influence the energy flow or ‘Qi’ in our body. In dry needling, fine needles are inserted into these specific tight areas of a muscle to quickly and efficiently relieve pain and tension. This will also illicit a response on your nervous system, helping to dampen down the pain sensations that you feel.
Dry Needling for Trigger Point Release
A trigger point can be felt as firm, tight portion of a tissue. Pressure applied to this can refer pain from the local area to another part of the muscle. When a muscle is specifically tight or hypersensitive, it can have an effect on the surrounding tissues and joints and can lead to stiffness or overwork of other muscles. So it’s important to relieve the tension as quickly as possible. This allows your body to get back to normal function and prevent persistent pain and adverse changes within the nervous system.
